Wanted: Wallan Basketball – Coaching Director

The Wallan Panthers are currently recruiting for the position of Coaching Director.

Wallan Basketball Incorporated (WBI) is seeking Expressions of Interest for the role of Coaching Director.

Wallan is an emerging Basketball Association on the fringe of metropolitan Melbourne and country Victoria, with junior representative teams participating in both the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) and the Victorian Junior Country Championships.

We are a family orientated club with an emphasis is on developing from within, attracting new talent and creating a culture of success with players who understand how to prepare themselves and represent our values.

The Association has a growing junior Domestic training program and competition with over 300 participants from Wallan and surrounding Mitchell Shire regions, including Craigieburn, Kilmore, Broadford, Wandong and Whittlesea.

The successful applicant will be remunerated to effectively and passionately lead the growth and development of players and coaches.

Position Overview:

The WBI Coaching Director will be required to ensure that the conduct of Wallan players, coaches and administrators fully align with the Association’s three core coaching philosophies and four Most Valued Player Attributes.

The three (3) foundation ​Coaching Philosophies​ of the Wallan Basketball Association are; ‘Improvement’, ‘Enjoyment’ and ‘Team First’.

The four (4) ​Most Valued​ ​Attributes​ of a ​Wallan Basketball Player​ are:

1. T​ENACIOUS: Eager to Compete. Gives 100% effort. Determination and intensity, in games and at training.

2. E​XECUTES: Consistency and excellence in fundamentals. Great footwork and skills. Plays team role.

3. A​SSISTS: Team Player with court vision and presence. Passes unselfishly. Creates baskets and stops.

4. M​INDFUL: Of being a team leader, coachable, composed, self-disciplined, respectful and sportsmanlike.

Position Competencies:

The WBI Coaching Director role demands the following key competencies and qualifications:

  • Recognised basketball coaching qualifications (Level 2 accreditation is the preferred minimum).

  • A track record of basketball coaching success.

  • Excellent verbal communication and organisational capabilities.

  • Personal values and coaching philosophies aligned with the Wallan Basketball Association.

  • Initiative and flexibility (of hours) to contribute what is required to be successful.

Position Responsibilities:

The Coaching Director reports to the WBI President and is accountable to the WBI Committee.

The WBI Coaching Director’s performance will be evaluated on discharge of the following responsibilities (in alignment with Wallan Basketball’s Strategic Plan):

  • Provide a report to committee meetings.
  • Implement and instill the WBI Coaching Philosophies, Values and Guidelines across all of the Association’s Player and Coach Development activities and programs.

  • Formulate, coordinate and deliver WBI-wide Coach Development programs and accreditation courses.

  • Formulate, coordinate and deliver WBI-wide Player Development programs and keep updated.

  • Oversee the growth and development of the WBI Hoops and Junior Domestic Training Program and coordinate holiday clinics.

  • Facilitation of Panthers try-out sessions, Panthers player and coach selection, and Domestic coach appointments.

  • Represent the Association in its dealings with players, parents, other Associations, BV, BVCC, VJBL, local government, WBI sponsors and the public generally.

  • Work within pathways for junior WBI talent.

  • Drive the overall improvement program for the association through researching and implementing best practices, improving operational standards across the board.

  • Build a positive relationship with all coaches involved at the Association.

  • Support the transition of Juniors to Senior ranks.

Position Deliverables:

The WBI Coaching Director role demands training session planning and stadium attendance to coordinate and lead the following player-coach development activities (with flexibility, to be agreed):

  1. Creation of a pool of domestic coaches and baseline training activities to increase the level of domestic play.

  2. Talent identification and elite talent development plans including involvement of WBI players in BVC pathway events and programs.

  3. Identification and development of VJBL coaches with an emphasis on non-parent roles where reasonable.

  4. Representative team selection, oversight and development in line with the WBI Player Development principles.

  5. Visibility and mentorship across all levels of junior and senior basketball through attendance and involvement with teams and training. Key to this is the ongoing positive relationship the role has with the coaches at all levels.

  • VJBL grading level for teams

  • Player and coach development

  • Build a pool of coaches
