Sunbury bolster roster ahead of State Championship Women

2017 BIG V WOMEN’S PLAYER AND STAFF ANNOUNCEMENTS: Sunbury Jets are pleased to announce it has retained core 2016 Championship team members, welcomed back local and Australian based players for its 2017 State Championship season.

The Jets welcome back core 2016 Championship players Kayla Theodore, Alex Darby, Genevieve McCorkell and Sharon Plichta. All players will bring experience and depth to the team. Sharon Plichta will move into the Assistant Coach role after playing with the team last season. Rebecca Marshall also joins the group and makes a step up from the Youth League Team.

“All of these ladies played very important roles in our Championship winning team last year and will be very significant parts to any success we have in the championship division.” Said Coach Kennedy.

Sunbury is pleased to add Bethany Theodore who has come off a good 2016 Victorian Youth Championship season. Beth will add some additional guard depth to the rotation. Coach Kennedy had to say this about Bethany’s return to the Jets “Beth has settled in really well and it’s great for us to have local players coming back to help us continue to push our program in a successful direction. Beth will bring some speed, quickness, defensive energy and creativity to our offence.”

The team has also added guard Shea Crotty and forward combination Jessica Slade and Rebecca Van Kuyk who both averaged double doubles throughout the Division One Women’s season in 2016. The trio together bring some international experience extra size and rebounding power to the squad. Coach Kennedy said this about their signings “All these girls are great competitors, workers and most importantly great people. They are all looking forward to making contributions around the club and getting to know the Sunbury community.”

The Jets add Josiah Smith and Chris Tighe to its coaching staff. Both come on board as Assistant Coaches for the 2017 season. The team also brings in Jackie Marshall as its Team Manager. Coach Kennedy spoke about the importance of having a good support staff “It’s always important to have a core group of people in your staff that can help your players get better. All of our Assistant Coaches bring a special set of skills that will help our players continue to develop. There will be times when I will be away with international commitments throughout the season, so will rely on my staff to care take the program in my absence. I know I can trust Sharon, Chris and Josiah to get things done.”

The club expects to make its final player announcement in the next two weeks.
