Sherbrooke announce 2017 men's squad featuring new import

19.12.2016

The Sherbrooke Suns are proud to announce their 2017 Division Two Men's squad, featuring their newest member, James Royal III.

Royal is a 6’5 Guard/Forward who hails from Atlanta Georgia in The U.S.

After his JUCO and NAIA College Career, James has had a successful time with some USA tour Teams, playing in the ABA and was invited to workout with NBA D LEAGUE Team the LA Defenders.

In 2015-16 he came for his first season in Australia playing in the NSW Waratah State League where he averaged 16pts, 6 RPG, and 5 Assist PG.

In 2016 on return to the states, he was also selected to attend Geelong Supercats (SEABL) Combine that was held in Dallas, Texas and according to Head Coach Leon O’Neil performed very well. Coach O’Neil said he was looking forward to seeing James in the BIG V league and that he would be a major asset to the Suns this year.

Coach Rob Roberts has said the Suns have put together a great squad now, which also consists of 5 Australian Goannas Players. The Goannas are Australia’s Mens Deaf Basketball team who are ramping up their preparations for the Deaflympics in Turkey next July. Never before has a team in Big V consisted of so many hearing-impaired players and Coach Roberts couldn’t be happier.

“This is such a great thing for Basketball in this country, not just the state” he said. “Some of these guys have the ability to be the best Deaf Basketballers in the world so to be able to offer them spots in our squad, where they can improve by playing and training week in week out, will give them a leg up heading to Turkey and adding James (import) to this squad is going to be amazing for them.”

Although the Goanna’s recently became the first team to win a gold medal in any Deaf Team Sports for Australia, they are still a fully self-funded side. Players travel all over the country for Team Camps and it is all paid for by the individuals. “Part of the reason for this year is to try to raise awareness for the boys for the Deaflympics” Coach Roberts Added.

“We are hoping that by seeing these guys play every week, BIGV, Basketball Victoria, Basketball Australia or a local business might want to come on board and help out”.

With the Big V season starting in March, the suns are still hoping to sign a quality point guard and add some depth to the squad, so if you are interested in working on helping the team and the Goannas this year you can get in touch with Coach Roberts on 0431 165 579.
