10.11.2016

The Chelsea Gulls are happy to announce that Mikaela Dickson (Camberwell) and Jenna McCormick (Westernport) will be in Chelsea colours in 2017, adding more scoring and depth to the already strong Lady Gulls line up.

For Dickson, 2016 was all about getting back on court and getting her confidence back, after a year away from the game due to suffering an ACL injury. With a season under her belt and an uninterrupted pre-season ahead of her, Dickson is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead at the Lady Gulls.

“I'm excited to be a part of a great group of girls and further my basketball knowledge and skills under the guidance of Craig. Having played against and watched Chelsea they clearly have all the ingredients to win a championship and I hope I can contribute to the group. “said Dickson

A former WNBL development player with the Melbourne Boomers 14/15, BIG V All-Star and Vic country representative Mikaela adds scoring power to a Lady Gulls back court that already boasts the 2016 Division 1 women`s two leading scorers. With the ability to control and lead the offense and great outside shooting touch Dickson is a great pick up for coach Smethurst and his new look team.

“We couldn`t be happier with Mikaela`s decision to join our squad for the 2017, we have big hopes for the girls next season. Following lengthy talks with Mikaela this off season it is clear she hopes to get back to the level she was formally playing at. The 2016 season for her was just about getting back on court after suffering a major injury to her knee, know she is back to being 100 percent healthy the sky is limit. I look forward to working with Mikaela and further developing aspects of her game.” Said Smethurst

Joining Dickson in the Lady Gulls back court next year will be Jenna McCormick. Jenna comes to the Lady Gulls following two years at the Westernport Steelers having previously played at the Southern Peninsula Sharks. A solid Defender and great outside Shooter McCormick is a great pick up for the lady Gulls.

Asked about what he thought McCormick will bring to the Lady Gulls for the 2017 season coach Craig Smethurst had the following to say “Jenna will be very important for us with her ability to hit the outside shot. It`s going to be really important for us to space the floor with the signings we have brought in, Jenna is the perfect player to do that for us. I look forward to working with Jenna over the next 12 months to develop her game.”

Jenna is Excited about the move to the Lady Gulls in 2017 and the opportunities that lay ahead.

“I'm looking forward to playing alongside some really talented players who I have played with and against for many years and to continue to work on my game with Craig and Andy. It's an exciting time to be a part of the Chelsea Gulls and I can't wait to work hard with a great bunch of people to give ourselves every opportunity to have a successful season. “

Returning to the Lady Gulls line up in 2017 will be Baby Boomers Lee Burch and Kelly Gardiner who return to the Lady Gulls after sitting out the 2016 while pregnant. Both players were part of the Lady Gulls 2015 Championship side.

2016 Lady Gulls team members Erin Smith, Bridget Keet, Jodie Ferguson and 2016 team captain Chelsie Ting return to the line-up and will be joined by development player Chloe Breznjak to complete the team list for the 2017 season.

In announcing the final inclusions to the Lady Gulls squad, coach Craig Smethurst is happy with the off-season additions. This coupled together with the players continuing their career with Chelsea, he is confident the Lady Gulls have a squad capable of providing an exciting brand of basketball each time they take the floor.

“Both Andrew (assistant coach Andrew Jacobson) and I are mindful that we have a mostly new group and it is going to take the girls some time to gel. All player are quality people and come to us focussed on achieving the ultimate goal of contending for a championship. All players share our passion for building a winning culture for next season and beyond.” said Smethurst.

The Lady Gulls squad is now complete and pre-season is well underway in preparations for the 2017 BIG V season.
