WP Basketball Association Presidents Update

As majority of the basketball community are aware in the early hours of Sunday morning we tragically lost our basketball home the Steelerdome to fire. The devastating impact this has had on our basketball family and greater community is enormous as we continue to try and face the fact that this is now reality.

Myself, the committee and other members of the association have been working through this situation over the past 30 hours and I would like to update everyone on where we are currently at with the major questions everyone will be asking.

Domestic Competition:

The domestic competition will continue as scheduled moving forward with changes to the games that were scheduled at Somerville Rec Centre to various other satellite locations. This may vary from week to week until we confirm an ongoing replacement which we hope to do within the next fortnight. Please continue to check the website for fixture updates and changes.

Junior Rep:

Moving forward our VJBL teams will play home games out of Dromana Secondary College and EMC (Langwarrin) on Friday nights. This will be updated on the VJBL website. Please continue to check the VJBL website for fixture changes.

Senior Rep:

For the Month of May our Big V home games will be played at Hillview Stadium (Rosebud Secondary College). After May the Big V teams will either be playing at Hillview or Dromana but other venues may become a possibility as the week progresses. Please continue to check the WPBA & Big V website for fixture details.

Our office staff will be in contact with our referees to advise them on all changes.

Office staff:

Dale, Tyler and Kenny will most likely be setting up temporarily at Dromana Basketball Stadium. We will have phones diverted. In the short term Tyler and Dale will be available on mobile or email. These guys are extremely busy working through fixtures and other items on limited resources due to everything being lost in the fire so please be patient and respectful of the work load they have.

What is next?

We now will have discussions with the Mornington Peninsula Shire as to gauge a time frame and idea of what is to happen with the Somerville Rec Centre site. This will take time and there is a lot of work involved in this process. There are a lot of different options for us as a club to look at and we will work swiftly to deliver the best outcome for WPBA.

As people are aware we have lost everything in this fire and people have been very generous offering donations and it is greatly appreciated. Once we count the total loss and damage to the club property and other items we will hold a club fundraiser event with details to be on our website.

Personally and on behalf of WPBA I would like to thank Glen Shannon and the entire Southern Peninsula Basketball Association on allowing us to utilise Dromana Basketball Stadium and Hillview Stadium during this period. I would also like to thank Chelsea Basketball, Casey Basketball, Mornington Basketball, Keysborough Basketball, Korumburra Basketball, Big V basketball, VJBL, Basketball Victoria, Basketball Victoria Country and anyone else who has offered their support. It has been overwhelming and humbling to have such a great basketball community behind us.

Thank you to all our sponsors who have stood by us in this period. We hope we can continue to grow these relationships even through this tough time.

We have lost our office, our training equipment, our home. We have lost memorabilia that dates back 20 years to

Western Ports beginnings at Bittern Stadium, these items can never be replaced. we still have our WPBA family of 290 junior rep players, 1200 domestic players, 40 Big V players, 50 referees, Coaches, parents and volunteers that will all come together and work as hard as we can to build this wonderful family club back to bigger and better things.

Any questions please let us know. Communication is very important in this situation and we will endeavour to do our best to keep everyone up to date on the process.

Thank you for all the support it is greatly appreciated and wonderful to have all teams, coaches, referees and parents back on the court involved in the game they love.

Kind Regards

James Langford

President - WPBA
